Duo Crossover Anime/Video Game DiD Teacher work; Photoshop Inking & Color.
***It's tough being a new teacher, but Mizuho Kazami has found an early friend in resident Health guru Kyoko Minazuki. But as Kyoko comes to check on Mizuho's adjustment to the job and the student body, she gets caught up, literally, in a distressful situation starring a small band of masked, armed brigands.
Kyoko could likely take out at least one herself with a fast kick move, but with weapons in play and 1 hostage already, she has no choice but to go along with it.
As for Mizuho, if and when the brutes leave them alone, escape from the ropes and the inevitable gags will be a Priority One!***
Coloring Notes:
Mizuho Kazami: I went with the jagged highlight style that Onegai Sensei ("Please Teacher") mainly uses for her hair. I tried to make sure her Anime eyes were as close to the show as possible. Otherwise her color scheme is pretty basic, although I did add pattern stamping to give her some textured nylons, despite the fact that I believe she doesn't wear any - call it artists' choice. One thing I did try new, although more apparent on Kyoko, below, was to erase the inked lines for the lips and just have the color determine that...I think I like the result.
Kyoko Minazuki: Official and available art varies widely, so I went with medium Purple for her heels and short skirt, and also as an undertone with her stockings, taking another liberty with the closely-thatched fishnets pattern stamp. Her white lab-style coat is very basic so I used a darker color for the shading. Otherwise I darkened up her shading for the facial features, as she came out too pasty white otherwise. I didn't know how to handle the hair, so I just tried a few variations of shading and highlights until I liked the shown result.
The Scene: I really tried to show the light source direction with the bully's hand holding the cloth soon-to-be gag - same with the stress marks. I also added extra color lines for texture on the walls - the school in Onegai Sensei is colored REALLY softly, so I found it challenging to cel shade it without making it look bad, but at the same time trying to avoid it feeling flat to the viewer. I know some of my shadows are likely not quite right, but I still hate that part as I am not great with light source in general. Interesting to note that I went with a pattern stamp for textured white rope this time. I like it a lot because it looks very similar to real-life braided rope, and since Kyoko has some power and she has to be tied tighter, there is more constricting of her bondage that needs to be shown and implied. I also messed around with varying color shades for the chairs to try and get something out of them - not sure I succeeded in that respect. Same goes with the gradients.
I hope you all enjoy the transition of sketch --> Inking (in my scraps) --> Color for this. Comments are welcome!
Thanks so much for going into such detail about the composition and the artistic choices you made. Seems to me you succeeded quite nicely with this one, and it certainly (for me) holds it's own regardless of backstory or any other explanation.
JC, I just noticed this and words can't even describe how incredible this is! Never mind the fact that it has been almost two years since you've posted anything but the amount of skill you've come back with is mind blowing! Your technique is back and better than ever. I am so thrilled to welcome you back to my favorite deviant on Deviantart!
Well, any skills I have are just experience...I really have no additional talent for coloring than I do for drawing -- I guess proof that if I can do it, so can most anybody else if they put in the time.
Nice work!
And if not, er, it fills the page
